Nepal - The Introduction
Nepal is small landlocked country. It has an area of 1, 47,181 sq.km which is about 0.03% of the world and 0.03% of the continent Asia. It is situated on the lap of the Himalayas. It is about 500 miles long and 100 miles wide. It is famous for both natural and cultural diversity. It is the land where Lord Buddha was born over 2,500 years ago. Roughly rectangular in shape, the Nepal is situated between China in the north and India in the South, east, and west. The land extends approximately 193 km north to south and 885 km east to west. It lies between the range from 59 m to 8,848m, the highest point on our planet. Crossing Nepal south to north is thus like climbing the ladder. The population of the country is 2,64,94,504 according to the national census report 2068.
Nepal has diverse land topography. It is divided into three geographical regions i.e. the terai, the hills and the mountain. Nepal contains a variety of climatic condition ranging from the tropical hot of the terai plains to the freezing cold of the high Himalayas. There is variety in vegetation also. Areas just below the snowline have poor tundra vegetation. The bases areas consist of coniferous forest. In the Centre across the east west, there are moderate hills with a cool climate and deciduous monsoon forest. The plain of the terai is hot and wet and consist of a dense sub-tropical evergreen forest. Nepal has diverse flora and fauna. Nepal provides shelter over 30 species of large wild animals. There are about 181 species of mammals and above 6,000 kinds of moths. About 8500 species of birds are found here. There are about 5800 species of angiosperms. Valuable herbs such as spikenard, cordyceps, Himalayan yew, serpentine etc. are found here. Spotted tiger, the red panda. Spiny Babbler (kande vyakur), one-horned rhino etc. are also found here that are rare species. More species of flora and fauna are yet to be discovered.
Nepal is agro-based country. 74% of people depend on agriculture. Some of the educated people are employed in other sectors such as office work, teaching, business etc. Nepal is’also a home of many castes and sub-castes of people. According to the king Prithivi Narayan Shah, Nepal is the common garden of four castes and thirty-six sub-castes. Nepal’s many ethnic groups are as varied as its land with their own language and culture. Feeding, housing, languages, festivals, and occupation differ from ecological region to another as well as from one community to another. Hindu is main religion. Besides, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Jainism, and Sikhism are also in practice. Though people follow different customs, speak different languages and wear different clothes, there is unity in diversity. Nepal is rich in natural and cultural beauty. There are many temples, stupas, monasteries, water spout, duties, and idols of gods and goddesses here. They are full of art and architecture. The highest peak of the world, Sagarmatha also lies here. Nepal is rich in water resources. Koshi, Gandaki, and Karnali are the main rivers of Nepal.
Hydro-electricity is produced from these rivers. They are used for the irrigation purpose too. Many rivers flow from high mountains twisting and turning round the hills and move through the terai. Our country Nepal seems to be beautiful because of the green forest but nowadays it is being destroyed which may result from natural disasters such as landslides, soil erosion, over flood etc. There are many National parks and Wildlife reserves to preserve them. Nepal is a developing country. Here about fifty percent people are literate. There are many schools and colleges running all over the country. In order to increase the status of the farmer, they are provided with the facilities of irrigation, modern fertilizers and modern methods of farming. The facilities of electricity, health care, transportation, and communication are also increasing. I feel proud to be the citizen of Nepal. Here each community is friendly, tolerant and harmonious to others. Here is unity in diversity. We should be united to protect geography and culture, and mobilize resources available for the good of the nation. Whatever it is, it is our country and whoever we are, we all are Nepalese.
